StocksThis daily, Comparable Log Scale chart shows three Pacific Rim stock markets. Note that these are in local currencies, and do not reflect full extent of these declines from the perspective of a US$ investor. |
CurrenciesThis daily, Comparable Log Scale chart shows the currencies (daily spot exchange rates) of the same five countries. The falling currencies magnify the stock market declines in the first chart. The Indonesian example: The Jakarta Composite Index (quoted in Indonesian Rupiah) fell from 740.83 on 7/8/97 to 339.54 on 12/15/97 (down over 54%). The Indonesian Rupiah was quoted at 2,363 Rupiah to the US$ on 1/2/97. By 1/23/98, it required 15,050 Rupiah to buy one US$ (down over 84%). From the perspective of the US, the Jakarta Composite Index fell from 30.46 US cents on 7/8/97 to 3.00 US cents on 1/23/98 (down over 90%). |
Hong Kong (1997) versus DJIA (1929)This Comparable Log Scale chart compares the recent action in the Hong Kong, Hang Seng stock index with the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 1929. It is not intended as a forecast! Because both series are drawn on the same log scale, the declines can be compared directly on a percentage basis. Hong Kong has just witnessed a decline that is quite similar to the first leg down in the DJIA in 1929. It was significant in the US then, and it is significant in Hong Kong now. |
